He started working as a freelancer for Pacific and Atlantic Photos. Photography Career HighlightsĮisenstaedt was very successful and became a full-time photographer in 1929. It was then that Alfred decided to quit his job and devote himself to photography. The photo was then sold to Der Welt Spiegel four years later for 3 marks, the equivalent of $12. He took the photo from the hillside that was approximately 50 yards away from the woman, and it captured her shadow. While on a vacation in Czechoslovakia in 1927, Eisenstaedt photographed a lady as she was playing tennis. In 1922, he became a belt-and-button salesperson, saving cash in order to purchase photographic equipment. He attended museums to study techniques of composition and light. This break gave him a chance to focus on photography. He was sent home to recover, and he spent one year recovering. On April 9, 1918, Eisenstaedt suffered a shrapnel injury to his legs. Like the other boys his age, he served in the German Army at the age of 17. This was when Alfred’s love of photography was born. At the age of eight, he moved with his parents and his two brothers to the city of Berlin where they lived until the rise of the Third Reich.Īlfred’s father was a trader and Alfred probably would have followed in his footsteps had his uncle not given him a camera at the age of 14. Early YearsĪlfred Eisenstaedt was born in Dirschau, which is located in West Prussia, in 1898 to parents Joseph and Regina. His work had been featured on the front page of LIFE Magazine over 90 times and he toured the world on over 2500 assignments. He survived Adolf Hitler’s attack on the Jews to become one of the most renowned photographers of his time. Some of the segments from the 1969 session were issued on the bootleg album The Lost Paris Tapes and were later used as part of the Doors’ An American Prayer album, released in 1978. The latter recording session was attended by Morrison’s personal friends and included a variety of sketch pieces. The first was in March 1969 in Los Angeles and the second was on December 8, 1970.

Morrison recorded his own poetry in a professional sound studio on two separate occasions. Volume II, The American Night, released in 1990, was also a success. The Lost Writings of Jim Morrison Volume I is titled Wilderness, and upon its release in 1988, became an instant New York Times Bestseller. These were the only writings published during Morrison’s lifetime.
These two books were later combined into a single volume titled The Lords and The New Creatures. The New Creatures verses are more poetic in structure, feel and appearance. The Lords consists primarily of brief descriptions of places, people, events and Morrison’s thoughts on cinema. He self-published two separate volumes of his poetry in 1969, titled The Lords / Notes on Vision and The New Creatures. At UCLA he studied the related fields of theater, film, and cinematography. Morrison began writing in earnest during his adolescence. Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Louis Ferdinand Celine, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Charles Baudelaire, Molière, Franz Kafka, Albert Camus, Honoré de Balzac and Jean Cocteau, along with most of the French existentialist philosophers. Some of his formative influences were Plutarch’s Parallel Lives and the works of the French Symbolist poet Arthur Rimbaud, whose style would later influence the form of Morrison’s short prose poems.
He was influenced by Friedrich Nietzsche, whose views on aesthetics, morality, and the Apollonian and Dionysian duality would appear in his conversation, poetry and songs.
A voracious reader from an early age, Morrison was particularly inspired by the writings of several philosophers and poets.
